About the Buddha...
The wall hanging’s on this site are not copies from ancient designs, they are original.
The facial features of our wall hangings are based on the Sukhothai art period. Sukhothai is also a former capital city of Thailand around the 13th century, these beautiful ruins can still be seen today with many fine examples of Buddha images. The art of this period has become one of the most recognised images of Thailand.
The Buddha himself was originally named Siddhartha and lived in Nepal near the border of India. He was born in the 6th century BC into a royal family who ruled the surrounding land. He became disillusioned with his lavish lifestyle and when he was in his late 20’s decided to follow the path of the holy men who had no home or possessions.
He cut off his long hair and removed his heavy jewellery hence the tight curls and exaggerated long ears depicted in our wall hanging’s
He was renamed ‘Buddha’ by his disciples after discovering a way of transcending from human suffering therefore attaining enlightenment. He spent most of his life teaching ‘the way of the Buddha’ in India. He died in his eightieth year – achieving the perfect Nirvana.
Interestingly enough, the Buddha image was not depicted until 100’s of years after his death and was produced not to enhance our homes but to honour and remind people of the Buddha.
Maybe in years to come these wall hanging designs will be remembered as a part of Thai art history from the 21st century.
