Could the huge Buddha statues of Bamiyan rise once again?

Experts might be in a position to be able to restore a huge sandstone Buddha statue in Afghanistan's Bamiyan Valley

German born researchers state it may be feasible to restore one of two giant 1,500-year-old Buddha statues blown up by the Taliban in Afghanistan just over 10 years ago. The destruction of these wonderful huge Buddha statues set off a worldwide outcry and left behind only empty cliff caves where these wondrous statues had once stood.
Researchers have looked at hundreds of  fragments of the sandstone statues that once towered up to 180 feet (55m) high in Bamiyan province, and found that they were once painted in vivid colours. "Conservation of the statue fragments would require building a small factory in the Bamiyan Valley – or 1,400 rocks weighing up to two tonnes would have to come to Germany”.
It will be up to the Afghan government, to ultimately decide on the statues' fate. The Taliban blew up the towering Buddha statues in March 2001 just a year before the Coalition toppled their government. The Bamiyan Valley, about 260 kilometres (160 miles) west of Kabul at an altitude of some 8,000 feet, once formed a branch of the Silk Road, which contributed to the diffusion of Buddhism from India to the region.
The German research team says spectroscopic tests have allowed them to better determine the statues' age which are thought to date from between 544 and 595 for the smaller Buddha statue and between 591 and 644 for the larger Buddha statue.
The fragile sandstone statue fragments are now either covered on the site or stored in a warehouse in Bamiyan province to await the Afghan government's decision.

Let’s hope these UNESCO world heritage Buddha statues can rise once more into the world.

We at The Buddha's Face are great fans of the new social media and use this through Twitter,blogging ,Facebook and exclusive You Tube videos to spread knowledge of Buddhist art and culture to as wide an audience as possible on the World Wide Web.

UK Thai Children's Fund Charity Gala 

The Buddha’s Face were delighted  last week to help organise a raffle at the charity gala event of the UK Thai Children’s Fund  which took place at the MTV Europe studios , at  Camden Lock, North London.

We used the opportunity to have a display of some of our larger Buddha Face wall art panels and decorative items for sale .The star prize of the night  was for the sole winner to select any of the large Buddha Wall Art on display as their gift.

In total over three hundred and fifty pounds (£350 pounds) was raised and we were extremely pleased when the winner selected  a Reclining Buddha wall art panel 1.75m x 90cm as their prize - we were doubly delighted when they also generously donated a further hundred pounds  to the UKTCF.

We all experienced a wonderful evening of food and entertainment and as the raffle was picked  the Buddha’s Face founder, Dennis Hukins donated  a  second raffle prize which was then won by Andy Pendergast. Andy and friends selected a 1m x 1m Buddha face wall art beautifully decorated  with gold leaf. Again generosity to such a good cause was the order of the night and he agreed to allow the Buddha wall panel to be sold on the Buddha's Face new website and for all the proceeds to be given to UKTCF. Music for the evening was provided by Demachena a lovely afro-fusion band who had a great sound and wonderful rhythm that got us all dancing and delicious food came from authentic Thai chefs.

Thai Buddhists have a word that describes donating their time, money or food (usually to monks on their alms round) it is  ‘tam boon’ (which means making good) and they do this as part of their Buddhist obligation to ensure that 'karma' (dhamma in Thia) is preserved and encorgaed. The Buddha’s Face company whose Buddhist art work and crafts are carved by  two families in Northern Thailand, are delighted to carry on this tradition.
