Tibetan Buddhism is the Buddhist creed and religion characteristic of Tibet and certain regions of the Himalayas, including northern Nepal, Bhutan, and parts of India. It is the official religion of Bhutan. Tibetan Buddhism is also practiced in Mongolia and parts of Russia and extends as far as NE China.
With the annexation of Tibet by China in 1947 the resulting diaspora has meant that Tibetan Buddhism has found its way to many Western countries, where the practice and religion has become somewhat popular. The most famous Tibetan Buddhist is His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet and has attracted celebrity followers such as Steven Seagal, Richard Gere, Una Thurman and Oliver Stone. The number Tibetan Buddhist worldwide is estimated to be between 10 and 20 million.
